If you don't feel up to the trip to the Chinese take-out, try making chop suey at home. No MSG!
Beef Chop Suey
For two to three people, you will need:
300 g/10 oz rump steak (flank steak)
250 g/ 8 oz frozen green beans
1 medium onion
1 can whole button mushrooms
1 medium red bell pepper
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup water
1 teaspoon oil
Slice the steak into thin strips. Peel the onion and cut it lengthwise.
Open the can of mushrooms and drain off the liquid. Core and slice the
bell pepper. Mix the cornstarch with a little water, then add the rest
of the cup of water and soy sauce. Pour boiling water over the green
beans just to defrost them quickly.
Then heat the oil in a good non-stick pan. Add the onion, and cook
until it starts to brown. Then add the steak, and brown that. Then add
the green beans and pepper and cook for not longer than about two
minutes. Then add the mushrooms and soy sauce/cornstarch mixture and
cook for about 1 minute till the mushrooms are hot. You may want to add
up to another 1/2 cup of water if the gravy is very thick.
Serve hot.
